On Friday, March 13, the Senate Natural Resources and Energy Committee&nbsp;<strong>tabled further discussion of&nbsp;<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/legislature.vermont.gov\/bill\/status\/2026\/S.224\"><strong>Senate Bill S.224<\/strong><\/a><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>(\u201cAn act relating to the management of the State\u2019s lakes\u201d) for the remainder of this legislative session<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"http:\/\/responsiblewakes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/VT-Statehouse-Hearing_Senate-Natl-Res-Energy-2026-03-11--1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1621\" srcset=\"http:\/\/responsiblewakes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/VT-Statehouse-Hearing_Senate-Natl-Res-Energy-2026-03-11--1024x576.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/responsiblewakes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/VT-Statehouse-Hearing_Senate-Natl-Res-Energy-2026-03-11--300x169.jpg 300w, http:\/\/responsiblewakes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/VT-Statehouse-Hearing_Senate-Natl-Res-Energy-2026-03-11--768x432.jpg 768w, http:\/\/responsiblewakes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/VT-Statehouse-Hearing_Senate-Natl-Res-Energy-2026-03-11--1536x865.jpg 1536w, http:\/\/responsiblewakes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/VT-Statehouse-Hearing_Senate-Natl-Res-Energy-2026-03-11--1320x743.jpg 1320w, http:\/\/responsiblewakes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/VT-Statehouse-Hearing_Senate-Natl-Res-Energy-2026-03-11-.jpg 1826w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Screenshot<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Although we sought only the removal of the bill sections ANR Secretary Moore claimed conflicted with the current 2024 Rule,&nbsp;<strong>this tabling meets our goal of allowing the ANR\/DEC&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dec.vermont.gov\/sites\/dec\/files\/documents\/Summary%20of%20Proposed%20Changes%20to%20VUPW.pdf\">amended Use of Public Waters (UPW<\/a>) Wakesports Rule, submitted last June, to move forward again,<\/strong>&nbsp;in time for this summer\u2019s boating season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What the Proposed DEC Rule Would Do<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If enacted as currently written, the amended rule would provide stronger protections for Vermont\u2019s lakes by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Prohibiting wakesports on 12\u201313 inland lakes<\/strong>&nbsp;that currently allow them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Improving safety on 17\u201318 remaining lakes<\/strong>&nbsp;by increasing the required distance between wakesports and other lake users\u2014from&nbsp;<strong>200 feet to 500 feet<\/strong>&nbsp;(for swimmers, water-skiers, canoeists, anglers, and others).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We await possible modifications DEC may make to the rule and then approval in April of the final rule by the Legislative Committee on Administrative Rules (LCAR).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Addressing Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both the DEC rule and S.224 were intended to address the removal of the 2024 UPW Rules \u201cHome Lake\u201d provision, which had aimed to reduce the costly spread of aquatic invasive species between lakes but proved impractical to implement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the rule and the bill propose different approaches to inspection and decontamination of wake boats, they share the same goal: establishing effective, rigorous, evidence-based standards to prevent the spread of AIS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>RWVL believes stronger AIS protections will still be required after the amended rules are in place. However, we feel the amended rules must be implemented first. We will continue to support efforts for stronger AIS and decontamination regulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Thank You \u2014 Your Advocacy Made the Difference<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thank you to our dedicated RWVL supporters.
