{"id":252,"date":"2022-12-16T15:05:48","date_gmt":"2022-12-16T20:05:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/responsiblewakes.org\/?p=252"},"modified":"2022-12-16T15:05:48","modified_gmt":"2022-12-16T20:05:48","slug":"wake-surfing-banned-waterskiing-limited-in-10-miles-of-willamette","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/responsiblewakes.org\/?p=252","title":{"rendered":"Wake-surfing banned, waterskiing limited in 10 miles of Willamette"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>According to the<em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesmanjournal.com\/story\/news\/2021\/01\/28\/waterskiing-wake-surfing-banned-parts-willamette-portland\/4299001001\/\">Oregon Statesman Journal<\/a><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesmanjournal.com\/story\/news\/2021\/01\/28\/waterskiing-wake-surfing-banned-parts-willamette-portland\/4299001001\/\">,<\/a> wake surfing will be prohibited in the entire 10 miles of the river from Waverly Marina upstream to Willamette Falls. The reason the activity is targeted is due to the size of the wave created and the impact it can have in a narrow stretch of the river with lots of docks that can be impacted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Travis Williams, executive director for Willamette Riverkeeper, said the ban on wake surfing is a smart move. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said that as the boats for wake surfing have gotten heavier and more powerful \u2014 essentially seeking to create legitimate surf waves \u2014 they\u2019ve had a negative impact on the river\u2019s ecology, private property and other river users. He said there have been other river users swamped by the huge waves, docks destroyed and banks sloughing down into the river. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNot all machines make sense in all areas,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is no different than prohibiting certain vehicles in our public lands. As these boats have grown and evolved over the past decade, the problems associated with them have become more acute.
