Where we Stand, The Course Ahead
When RWVL launched, wakesports were permitted on 78 Vermont lakes. Thanks to the first round of rulemaking — and your advocacy — that number dropped to 30.
The second statewide round, now underway, would bring it down to 18. Its success depends on the same committed community that started this work five years ago.
Our immediate goal is protect 10 more lakes by securing the second round of rulemaking.
Once these are achieved, RWVL will:
- Work to prohibit wakesports on 5 petitioning lakes out of the 18 — the two Averills, Caspian, Willoughby, and Echo.
- Support statewide efforts against aquatic invasive species

What happens next
Before new rules take effect for the summer 2026 boating season, four steps must be completed:
- The Agency of Natural Resources analyzes public comments received in February.
- ANR submits the rules to the Legislative Committee on Administrative Rules (LCAR).
- LCAR confirms the rules align with legislative intent.
- Rules are enacted before the 2026 season opens.
We may need you again soon. RWVL is monitoring this process closely and will likely call on you to contact lawmakers and spread the word. Your efforts have been remarkably effective — every Vermont lake lover owes you thanks.
Stay engaged. Stay ready. We’re close.
